Take a look at this video of Gwendolyn playing the piano (FingerPiano Lite), the drums (Drum Kit Lite), and making farm animals make noises (Farm Sounds Lite). These were three simple FREE applications that Gwendolyn was having fun playing with, independently, literally an hour after opening her iPod Touch. Pretty amazing stuff! The possibilities are endless...

Gwendolyn Playing On Her iPod Touch; So Many Possibilities!
Gwendolyn's big Christmas present this year was an iPod Touch. We think the super-sensitive "touch" screen and the thousands of fun applications through the App Store will be great for her to play independently -- something that we're always struggling with given her challenges. We also think the assistive communication applications may help Gwendolyn communicate more effectively -- and at a teeny-tiny-fraction (literally) of the cost of huge assistive communication systems. We've already downloaded and tried the Proloquo2Go and iConverse assistive communication applications and there is definitely promise, but one is way too complex and the other isn't flexible enough for Gwendolyn's needs. After seeing how easily Gwendolyn has taken to the "touch" screen and thinking more about what she would need from an assistive communication application, we are looking into having one built that would best meet Gwendolyn's, and other SMA children's, simple needs -- more on that soon as we get things going on the development front.

There is also a game called 'Monkey Kick' (FREE) that she might enjoy. It has different colors, and all she has to do is touch the screen and the monkey kicks the ball - I just downloaded it tonight! Fun! Glad you all had a great Christmas! Sending much love to my favorite little girl in CA!!

We are getting ready to get Preston an Ipod touch through school. He has cereberal palsy and deaf. He has cochlear implants but has had them for over a year and still isn't talking much due to his cp. I am excited about getting it and would like more info on the programs you use for her. Of course when you get a chance. I read your blogs daily and so inspired by what you guys have done for your daughter. You are truly amazing parents and she is a very lucky little girl to have you guys.
I got an iPod touch for Christmas too and I am so excited to download these applications for Nicholas. I think he will love them! Thanks for sharing!
Well done! I love it. One of the main things I've been focusing on for the past 5 years is the use of iPods and similar devices for improved access to the curriculum and increased engagement and increased communication. I'd love to repost this on my Friday blog if that's OK with you.
