Gwendolyn Playing On Her iPod Touch; So Many Possibilities!

Gwendolyn’s big Christmas present this year was an iPod Touch. We think the super-sensitive “touch” screen and the thousands of fun applications through the App Store will be great for her to play independently — something that we’re always struggling with given her challenges. We also think the assistive communication applications may help Gwendolyn communicate more effectively — and at a teeny-tiny-fraction (literally) of the cost of huge assistive communication systems. We’ve already downloaded and tried the Proloquo2Go and iConverse assistive communication applications and there is definitely promise, but one is way too complex and the other isn’t flexible enough for Gwendolyn’s needs. After seeing how easily Gwendolyn has taken to the “touch” screen and thinking more about what she would need from an assistive communication application, we are looking into having one built that would best meet Gwendolyn’s, and other SMA children’s, simple needs — more on that soon as we get things going on the development front.

Take a look at this video of Gwendolyn playing the piano (FingerPiano Lite), the drums (Drum Kit Lite), and making farm animals make noises (Farm Sounds Lite). These were three simple FREE applications that Gwendolyn was having fun playing with, independently, literally an hour after opening her iPod Touch. Pretty amazing stuff! The possibilities are endless…
